VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Name: John Constantine
Age: 36 (May 10 1982)
Physical Appearance: Can’t be caught without the askew red tie and trenchcoat now, can we?
Point in Timeline: Legends of Tomorrow S04E08
World Description: Earth One which is similar to present day Earth with the integration of a few historical deviations and fictional cities to accommodate the events in DCTV.
History/Background: wiki
TL;DR in under 200 words: John’s mother died giving birth to him in Liverpool, UK. He was raised by his abusive alcoholic father who blamed him for his mother’s death. He was a rebellious working class youth, picking up a lifelong smoking habit when he was young and starting his own punk rock band with a few mates. His first encounter with the occult also dates back to his teenage years when he met a girl who introduced him to it. He pursues the occult relentlessly hoping that one day he can bring back his mother, and along the way he makes friends with others also interested in the occult. That all falls apart in Newcastle when John’s friend’s daughter Astra gets possessed by a demon. John’s brilliant idea is to conjure an even more powerful demon, Nergal, to combat the one that had possessed Astra, but this backfires and results in Nergal killing Astra and damning her soul to Hell. Constantine’s own soul is damned as well as a result of this. His team blames him for the incident and falls apart, and he winds up working alone until he meets Oliver Queen, Sara Lance and the rest of the Legends.

Noteworthy Positive Characteristics:

  • Constantine genuinely wants to do the right thing. He’s very cynical - some might say pessimistic - and the foul-mouthed warlock talks a lot of shit. He says he’s motivated to work against evil because it’ll get him his soul back and he gets to look cool in front of the ladies. He doesn’t even have that good of an opinion of the heavenly host and whatever good side they’re claiming to be on. But in reality he’s an honourable man who’s trying to do his best keeping the bad guys in check with the cards he’s been dealt. The emotional stonewalling that he’s probably perfected after years of having his father smack him around and put cigarettes out on his arms masks genuine pain and guilt for what happened in Newcastle. He’s mellowed out and matured significantly since then and the sorcerer has become less irresponsible with his magic. He won’t go as far as to call himself a ‘good man’ - he’s not even sure what that means - but he’s not afraid to go where angels fear to tread to fight the good fight.

  • Witty and uses every resource at his disposal. Waste not want not! Constantine is wily and cunning, and he doesn’t brute force his way through most of his nasty encounters. He’s not really built for fights and most demons would rip him to shreds where he stands anyway. He cherrypicks spells and rituals that will work for what he needs, and he will lie and cheat his way to victory at every opportunity. Where he can he will use sleight of hand, emotional manipulation, bedazzling magic tricks and makes promises he can’t keep to get the job done. It’s kind of just his ‘style’ and he doesn’t even feel bad for doing it. No hard feelings, alright?

  • Honesty is the best policy (most of the time). He can be a charmer when he wants to be and lie through his teeth if the situation calls for it, but most of the time John is very brusquely honest. He doesn’t make a habit of beating around the bush. If he thinks you’re full of shit he’ll call you out. He’ll tell you exactly what he thinks of you and your shenanigans, and if your bullshit faucet is turned to be at maximum flow, don’t expect John to hold back. He doesn’t care whether you’re an angel, demon, human or something in between - if he doesn’t like you and being in your good books is going to be of little use to him, he’ll tell you to your face. Most people find the bluntness refreshing, so he’s happy to proclaim this as his strong suit.

Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:

  • A man of questionable… morals. Constantine is, among many things, a con artist par excellence. If you look gullible he will probably make use of you. If he finds your flaw(s) he will exploit the living shit out of it. If you look easy to swindle he will probably target you first. If you’re grieving, hurt, vulnerable, lonely or just not in the right frame of mind, he’ll probably try to get some personal gain out of it. And for the right price he’ll even perform questionable spells, like making sure she says yes when you pop the question. He’s not beneath using the elderly, children, dogs and anything else he can muster up as a bargaining chip, and he doesn’t seem to have a high regard for anything that other people consider sacred. He seems willing to play fast and loose with human lives he uses as poker chips, but if you think he doesn’t have a few cards up his sleeves you’ll be in for an unpleasant surprise.

  • Difficult to get close to. When the people close to you seem to have a penchant for dying horrible, gruesome deaths, you tend to develop a habit of wanting to be alone. By default Constantine tries to push people away and if you don’t get the hint or that doesn’t work for whatever reason, he tries harder. Casual flings are one thing and he’s flexible when it comes to who he spends his nights with, but he doesn’t want to commit to anything more than that knowing that he can’t have anything nice.

  • Exorcist, demonologist, and Master of the Dark Arts... Overconfidence and his attitude problem in general is still a bit of an issue. (Just a wee bit). To be clear, he’s never thought of himself as someone who knows every single thing about magic and can wield it without consequence. But he certainly thinks he knows enough that he can borrow a bit here, use a bit there, sprinkle a bit of pizzazz and he’ll come out on top. He’ll even try and double-cross the Devil if he thinks he can get away with it. For someone who actively rejects the hero label he can waltz into trouble feeling a bit more invincible than he really is. Cocky, arrogant, Mr. turn up his collar strutting around with his billowing trenchcoat flapping wildly about his arse thinks he’s hot shit and isn’t actually sure why this is a negative trait. The rest of us mere mortals probably find this aspect of the sorcerer to be slightly less endearing.

Character Fears: John is driven primarily by his desire to get his soul ‘undamned’, but he’s also wary about getting too close (emotionally) to people. The idea of saving the world by sleeping around sounds great, he’ll get right to it and he’s pretty flexible so he doesn’t even care with whom, but he’s pretty sure there has to be a few strings attached that he just hasn’t figured out yet.
Powers/Abilities: The working class warlock is covered in mystical tattoos and he’s so much more than just a stage magician with cheap parlour tricks. Having practised magic since his teenage years, Constantine speaks numerous modern and ancient languages, has a vast array of spells up his sleeve across the full array of light and dark magic, and most of it isn’t just smoke and mirrors. Playing with fire and escape artistry 101 can impress the average 12 year old but the sorcerer with his swiss-army knife approach to magic can also do cloaking and revealing spells, protective wards and magic circles, summon and banish/exorcise demons, enchant inanimate objects for various purposes, scrying and divination, telekinesis and telepathy, travel across dimensions and through hell, etc.

For the purpose of this setting he will rely mostly on his manipulative nature. He’s still a card sharp and he still can perform some flashy magic tricks, but nothing that will
1) involve controlling or reading other peoples’ minds
2) magically compel people to do things against their will (though he might try and verbally manipulate them the same way as anyone is wont to do in a healthy and nurturing relationship...)
3) break the game like summoning demons and lighting the whole planet on fire
4) opening any sort of mystical passageway to heaven, hell or another dimension in order to leave Zhautas (this could be done accidentally as a player plot to let nasty things in if required, but won't allow anyone to go back the other way)
5) have any sort of ‘unfun’ instakill or instantly learn everything about [new variable] mechanic
Personal Item: His Ace of Spades zippo lighter.
